Le avventure del signor Verdant Green in short

At its center, this is the story of a gentle, trusting boy sent from a sheltered country house into the busy life of Oxford. He is laughed at, fooled, and sometimes hurt, but he is also befriended, and he gradually learns to stand on his own.

What Le avventure del signor Verdant Green is about

What happens to a boy who has never played a game, never slept away from his mother, and believes every word he hears? Verdant Green, eighteen years old and nearsighted, goes up to Oxford to find out. Within days strangers on a coach mock him, a friend swears the Vice-Chancellor carries a poker, and a wine party leaves him helplessly drunk.

The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green was written by Cuthbert Bede, who knew Oxford from the inside. You get the slang, the sports, the scouts and the tradesmen of a Victorian university town, seen through a young man who is kind, shy and very easy to fool.

A chi è rivolto. This book suits readers who enjoy comic scenes, lively friendships, and the customs of old Oxford. If you like practical jokes, mishaps on horse and river, and a gentle love story, you will smile often.

A sheltered boy from a family of easy marks

Verdant Green comes from a family that has been fooled for centuries. The book opens with a mock family history that traces the Greens back to the Crusades. They mortgage their lands for others and sign small bills as a favour.

Verdant is born at Manor Green in Warwickshire. His mother believes in teaching at home, so he sits in the schoolroom with his three sisters and his aunt Virginia. He grows up girlish, shy, and kind, with no knowledge of boys' games. The rector's son Charley tells him dreadful tales of floggings at public school, and Verdant believes every word.

Then the rector persuades Mr. Green that a university will teach the boy self-reliance. Mrs. Green gives way after Aunt Virginia recites the deeds of the mothers of Greece and Rome. The family sends Verdant off with silver spoons engraved Semper virens, always green.

Verdant is sent to Oxford by people who love him and who know it only by hearsay.
