Brevi studi su grandi argomenti in short
Froude's collection argues one thing from many angles. People cannot be reduced to laws, because they can choose to forget themselves, so history is a record to be read and not a science that forecasts. The best historians, like Homer and Shakespeare, let deeds speak and keep their own theories out of the way.
What Brevi studi su grandi argomenti is about
What if history is only a child's box of letters, from which you can spell any word you please? James Anthony Froude, a Victorian historian, asks exactly that in the first piece of this collection, a lecture given at the Royal Institution. He admits that a science of history sounds like talk about the colour of sound. Then he tests the idea against the facts.
Short Studies on Great Subjects gathers essays and lectures that Froude wrote in the 1850s and 1860s. They cover the Reformation, the Scottish Kirk, the monasteries, the Book of Job, Homer, Elizabeth's sea captains and a cunning medieval fox. Each asks how we should judge people and ideas from another age. Follow Froude's answer, and the Reformation, the saints and even the fables fall into place.
A chi è rivolto. Readers who enjoy Victorian argument, Reformation history, vivid portraits of Luther and Erasmus, and essays on how we judge the past will find plenty here. Lovers of Homer, sea adventure and fables will feel at home too.

History cannot predict, so it is no science
Froude opens by facing the strongest case against him. Henry Buckle had argued that human conduct follows laws as fixed as the laws of the stars. If that is right, history reduces to cause and effect.
Froude asks what makes a subject a science. Its facts must fall into groups, and it must let us foresee what comes next. History cannot pass that test. Its events happen once, so no experiment is possible. Tacitus, looking at Rome, saw only a detestable superstition and could not have guessed what it would become.
Worse, a theory can always find its facts. A follower of Hegel or an admirer of the noble savage can each pick letters from the box and spell the word they came to spell. A pattern in the past is not a law until it can tell you what comes next.

Domande su Brevi studi su grandi argomenti
What is Short Studies on Great Subjects about?
It collects essays and lectures by James Anthony Froude on history, the Reformation, Luther and Erasmus, Scotland, belief, Spinoza, Homer, Elizabethan sailors and moral character, all asking how we should judge people and ideas from the past.
What does Froude mean by a child's box of letters?
He means that history can be arranged to spell any theory. A writer picks the facts that suit, ignores the rest, and so makes the past agree with his own opinion.
Does Froude think history is a science?
No. He says a science must let us foresee the future, and historical events never repeat. Because people can choose to act against self-interest, he holds that human conduct cannot be calculated like the stars.
What is the lecture on Erasmus and Luther about?
It sets two reformers side by side. Erasmus offers learning, wit and tolerance. Luther offers faith and honesty. Froude asks why the quiet scholar failed and the stubborn monk changed Europe.
Is this collection easy to follow?
Yes, because Froude argues through scenes, letters, portraits and fables. Each essay can be read alone, so you can start with the lectures on Erasmus and Luther or turn to the short animal tales.
