My Ántonia, Chapter 7: riassunto

Chapter 7 di 45 · Book 1: The Shimerdas · 8 min per leggere il capitolo

In Chapter 7, Jim kills a large rattlesnake with a borrowed spade while exploring prairie-dog burrows with Ántonia, and her admiration changes their relationship. Although the narrator credits favorable circumstances rather than exceptional courage, Ántonia stops treating Jim as inferior and recognizes him as an equal.

Cosa succede

  1. Jim takes Ántonia to Russian Peter’s house to borrow a spade for Ambrosch, then they stop to investigate prairie-dog burrows.
  2. Ántonia screams at a huge rattlesnake behind Jim, who turns and strikes its head with the spade.
  3. Ántonia praises Jim’s bravery, and they measure the snake before dragging it home.
  4. Otto Fuchs examines the snake, stresses the value of Jim’s tool, and recognizes that his first strike settles the encounter.
  5. The narrator credits luck and the snake’s weakness, while Ántonia’s admiration ends her superior manner toward Jim.
