La mia prima estate nella Sierra in short

Muir's book is the daily record of one summer, from the hot foothills in June 1869 to the dusty home ranch in September. A sheep job pays his way into the high Sierra, and the flock gives the book its comic thread. Around that thread he builds a close study of trees, flowers, birds, glaciers and weather.

What La mia prima estate nella Sierra is about

Imagine being hired to watch two thousand and fifty sheep when all you want is to study rocks, plants and clouds. In June 1869 John Muir takes exactly that job. He is a young Scottish-born wanderer with little money, a notebook tied to his belt and a St. Bernard dog named Carlo.

My First Summer in the Sierra is Muir's journal of that season, shaped later into a book from his notes and sketches. It follows the flock from the dry foothills up to Yosemite and the high meadows of the Tuolumne. You get bears, a shepherd who sees nothing in a waterfall, glaciers, ferns and a man who feels the mountains as holy.

A chi è rivolto. This book will delight readers who love hiking, wild places, birds, flowers and trees, and anyone curious about Yosemite, glaciers and early American conservation. It suits those who enjoy a warm, joyful voice.

The 10 key ideas

A sheep job opens the way to mountains

Muir longs for the high Sierra, but he has no money for food. He half believes he could live on seeds and berries, yet the bread question keeps nagging him.

Then Mr. Delaney, a sheep owner, makes an offer. Muir will go with a shepherd and his flock to the sources of the Merced and Tuolumne rivers, just where he hopes to explore. Muir protests that he knows nothing of the upper country. Delaney brushes this aside. He needs only a trustworthy man in camp, and Muir will be free to study plants, rocks and scenery.

Muir agrees. He also gains a loyal companion when a hunter begs him to take his big St. Bernard, Carlo, out of the valley heat. On June 3, 1869, the party sets off in a cloud of dust, with Muir's notebook tied to his belt.

A modest, practical job can become the doorway to the life you want. Take any honest road that leads toward what you love.

What is My First Summer in the Sierra about?

It records John Muir's summer of 1869 as he tends a flock of sheep into the California mountains. Along the way he studies plants, animals, glaciers and weather, visits Yosemite and Lake Tenaya, and falls in love with the high country.

Who are Carlo, Billy and Mr. Delaney?

Carlo is the St. Bernard dog who guides and guards Muir. Billy is the shepherd who sees little beauty around him. Mr. Delaney is the sheep owner who hires Muir and brings supplies to the camps.

Why does Muir call the Sierra the Range of Light?

After weeks among bright granite, glittering lakes, frosty meadows and shining forests, Muir decides the range deserves a name better than Snowy Range. He calls it a land filled with unusual sunshine and sparkle.

Is My First Summer in the Sierra easy to read?

It is written as short dated journal entries, so you can read a day at a time. The voice is warm and lively, with comic scenes of sheep, dogs and bears between the nature descriptions.
