Memorie della Corte di Maria Antonietta in short

Madame Campan's book is one long walk through a collapsing world. It begins with a girl reading to the daughters of Louis XV and ends with a queen who has lost nearly everything. In between, small acts such as a sunrise or a cab ride become charges against a young foreign princess, and a king who loved reform cannot give a firm order.

What Memorie della Corte di Maria Antonietta is about

What does it feel like to be fifteen and step into Versailles while the whole palace is draped in black? Henriette Genet did exactly that. She became reader to the daughters of Louis XV, and later she served Marie Antoinette from the day the young Austrian princess arrived in France.

Memoirs of the Court of Marie Antoinette is her own account, written in retirement as Madame Campan. She wrote for her family and for a princess buried under slander. Her chief merit, she says, is accuracy, because she tells what she saw herself. You get the court from the inside, from the dressing rituals to the collapse of a monarchy.

A chi è rivolto. Readers who love the eighteenth century, royal courts and the French Revolution, and who enjoy eyewitness stories full of small human detail.

A clever girl enters the court at fifteen

Born on October 6, 1752, in Paris, she was named Jeanne Louise Henriette Genet. Her father taught his children himself. He made sure Henriette learned music, English and Italian, and above all a polished way of reading aloud.

At fifteen she was made reader to the daughters of Louis XV, who were known as Mesdames. Her father listed her talents one by one so that she would understand the envy they would bring. On her first day at Versailles she could barely read two sentences, because her heart raced and her sight blurred.

The court also taught her to laugh. At Compiègne the king found her tumbled among her petticoats after she had spun in her hoop. He told her, laughing, that a reader who makes cheeses should be sent back to school. Madame Campan tells large matters through small moments like this.

The best witness to a palace is someone young enough to notice everything.
