A chi è rivolto

You will love this book if you enjoy ancient stories with a warm heart, journeys with a hidden guide, or tales of marriage and family.

Che cos’è questo libro

Picture a man who buries the dead at night, sleeps by his courtyard wall, and loses his sight to sparrow droppings. That is Tobit, a Jewish exile in the Assyrian capital Nineveh, and the hero of an ancient tale that fits a family, a demon, an angel, and a fish into a few short chapters.

The Book of Tobit comes from an unknown author, yet the skill of the storyteller is plain. It asks why the righteous suffer, and it answers with kitchens, roads, rivers, and wedding rooms. You will hear that prayer is heard, that help may arrive in disguise, and that love is a form of healing.

Tobit Keeps Faith and Buries the Dead

The tale opens with Tobit speaking about himself. He belongs to the tribe of Naphtali, and the Assyrian king carried him off to Nineveh. He says that all his life he has walked in truth and justice, and the story soon puts that claim to the test.

He gives the evidence. When his tribe turns to the calf of Baal, he alone goes up to Jerusalem for the feasts. He gives a third tenth of his increase to those for whom it is fitting, as his grandmother Deborah taught him. In exile his kin eat the food of the Gentiles, but Tobit refuses, because he remembers God with all his heart.

Then a new king kills many Israelites in a rage. Tobit buries the bodies in secret. A neighbor informs on him, and everything he owns is seized, leaving him only his wife Anna and his son Tobias.

Later, on a feast day, a fine dinner is set out. Tobit sends his son to find a poor man to share it, but Tobias comes back with news of a strangled man lying in the marketplace. Tobit leaps up before he has tasted a bite and buries the man after sunset. His neighbors mock him for it.

That night he sleeps by his courtyard wall with his face uncovered, and sparrow droppings fall into his open eyes. A white film forms, and no physician can cure it. Anna takes in sewing to keep them fed, and she asks where his acts of charity have gotten him. Goodness in this story carries a real cost, and it does not buy protection.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about The Book of Tobit

What is the Book of Tobit about?

It follows Tobit, a faithful Jew in exile at Nineveh who goes blind after burying the dead, and Sarah, a young woman in Media haunted by an evil spirit. Their prayers bring the angel Raphael, who guides Tobias on a journey.

Who is Raphael in the Book of Tobit?

Raphael is an angel sent by God to heal Tobit and Sarah. He travels with Tobias in human form under the name Azarias. His name means God heals, which matches his task in the story.

Why is the Book of Tobit not in most Bibles?

It was not part of the Hebrew Bible as Jewish communities fixed it, and Protestant churches usually follow that list. Catholic and Orthodox churches include it in their Old Testament. Nothing was hidden, since it has been widely read throughout.

Is the Book of Tobit a true story and when was it written?

It is a told tale of faith rather than a chronicle. Scholars date it between the fifth and second centuries before the Common Era, often to the third or early second. Aramaic and Hebrew fragments were found at Qumran.

Is the Book of Tobit easy to read?

It is short, with a clear plot and many small scenes, including a fish at a river, a family dinner, and a wedding. The characters speak plainly, and the story is easy to follow from start to finish.
