A chi è rivolto

You will enjoy this if you love lives of saints, early Christian Syria, tales of desert hermits, vivid visions, or the question of why a man would choose a pillar.

Che cos’è questo libro

Picture a boy who burns incense without knowing why he offers it. He gathers a sweet resin called storax on the hills near his village of Sis and kindles a small fire. Nobody taught him this. He only feels that it is right.

That boy grows into Simeon, who stands for decades on a pillar near Antioch. The Life of Simeon the Stylite is a Syriac work from the Christian communities of Syria, placed in the fifth century. It gathers visions, battles with demons, healings and letters from kings. You follow one life from a shepherd's hillside to a tower of forty cubits.

A shepherd boy is given a golden staff

The book opens in Sis, a village in the region of Nicopolis, where Simeon is born to Christian parents. From boyhood he loves shepherding. He is gentle, small, strong, and quick on his feet.

He collects storax as he tends the flocks and burns it as incense, though he does not know why he offers it. He has never heard the Scriptures. After his parents die, he walks into a church, hears a reading, and asks what these Scriptures are. They tell him they are the word of God, who lives in heaven. Simeon is amazed and comes back the next Sabbath.

Soon after, he sees his first vision. A figure like lightning, holding a golden staff, raises him from the ground and tells him not to fear. The stranger says Simeon will lead many from error to the truth, and that kings and judges will obey him. Inside a temple, a radiant man gives him the staff to shepherd the flock of Christ.

The calling comes first and understanding follows. Simeon acts on a pull he cannot name.

A calling can come before knowledge, and the book asks you to trust that pull.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

What is the Life of Simeon the Stylite about?

It tells the story of Simeon, a shepherd from Sis who becomes a hermit and then a pillar-dweller near Antioch. It follows his visions, his years of fasting and prayer, his healings, and his influence on kings and common people.

What does Stylite mean?

Stylite comes from a Greek word for pillar. It names a holy man who lives on top of a pillar. Simeon's pillar grows from a low stone to a tower of forty cubits, built in three sections.

Simeon was a real person of the fifth century, and the book is a devotional biography about him. Scholars place it soon after his death, and it blends historical details with miracle stories told as witnessed fact.

Who wrote the Life of Simeon the Stylite?

The author is unknown. The Syriac Life comes from the Christian communities of Syria and was composed in Syriac, probably by writers close to the circle around Simeon's enclosure and monastery.
