Myth

Literary term · say it MITH

A myth is a traditional story that helps a culture explain the world, its beliefs, or human experience, often through gods and extraordinary events. In literature, myths can stand as stories themselves or give familiar characters and events a deeper meaning.

Three ways myth appears

Stories of origins

Some myths explain how the world, human beings, or parts of nature began. They connect everyday things with sacred or extraordinary events.

At the beginning of Metamorphoses, the confused mass of Chaos becomes an ordered world, with land, sea, and sky.

In Metamorphoses by Ovid

Gods in human affairs

Myths often show gods helping, punishing, or competing through human beings. Their actions connect human struggles with powers beyond ordinary life.

In The Iliad, Athena stops Achilles from attacking Agamemnon during their quarrel, intervening directly in a human conflict.

In The Iliad by Homer

Journeys beyond ordinary life

A mythic journey takes a figure into places beyond normal human reach. Encounters there can explore death, duty, loss, or the limits of human power.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus travels to the land of the dead to consult Tiresias and encounters the spirit of his mother.

In The Odyssey by Homer

How to spot myth

  1. Look for gods, supernatural beings, or journeys beyond the ordinary world.
  2. Ask whether the story explains an origin, belief, or shared human experience.
  3. Notice familiar figures or events drawn from a culture’s traditional stories.

Does myth mean a false story?

In literary study, myth means a traditional story with cultural meaning, not simply a false claim. Readers can study what a myth expresses about death, nature, duty, or belief without deciding whether its events literally happened.

What is the difference between a myth and a fable?

A myth usually explores cultural beliefs or the nature of the world, while a fable usually teaches a practical moral. Myths often involve gods and sacred events; fables often use talking animals and end with a clear lesson.
