Epic

Literary term · say it EP-ik

An epic is a long narrative poem about extraordinary deeds whose importance reaches beyond one person's life. It often follows a hero through war or dangerous journeys, with gods, supernatural forces, and the fate of a whole people involved.

Where epic shows up

Extraordinary journeys

An epic journey tests a hero through dangers far beyond ordinary experience. Getting home or reaching a new land can become the central struggle.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus escapes the Cyclops by blinding him, then helps his companions escape beneath the creature's sheep.

In The Odyssey by Homer

The fate of a people

An epic connects individual choices with the future of a community. A single battle or death can carry importance for an entire city or nation.

In The Iliad, Achilles kills Hector outside Troy, leaving the city without its greatest defender and Hector's family facing a bleak future.

In The Iliad by Homer

Supernatural struggles

Gods, spirits, or other supernatural powers often take part in epic events. Human actions may become part of a much larger struggle.

In Paradise Lost, Satan tempts Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and Adam later eats it too, bringing consequences for all humanity.

In Paradise Lost by John Milton

How to spot an epic

  1. Look for a long story told in verse.
  2. Notice extraordinary deeds, dangerous journeys, or supernatural powers.
  3. Ask whether the events affect a whole people, not just one person.

Can a novel be an epic?

A novel can be called epic in a broader sense, though the traditional literary epic is a poem. The broader label usually points to a vast setting, major historical events, or a story spanning many lives and years.

Does an epic hero have to be a good person?

An epic hero does not have to be morally good or always admirable. Courage and strength may sit alongside pride, cruelty, or selfishness. Achilles in The Iliad is a great warrior whose anger also brings suffering to others.
