Nella fiera della vanità in short
In Vanity Fair argues that Paris turns pleasure into a craft. The Parisienne makes charm a daily discipline, the dressmakers sell flattery along with cloth, and every place from the racecourse to the Casino serves as a stage for display. Brainerd moves through the year in order and ends with the Americans who pay for much of it.
What Nella fiera della vanità is about
Picture a woman in chiffon and sable, holding her blue hands out to a brazier at the Auteuil races while snow flurries drift past. She shivers, laughs, and is perfectly happy, because the spring outfit she planned has to be seen. Her maid reports freezing weather and she simply asks for her fur coat.
That small scene sums up In Vanity Fair by Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd, a book about people who treat dress as an art and pleasure as a daily duty.
A chi è rivolto. This is for readers who love fashion history, Belle Époque Paris, gossip with a sense of humour, and the social life of the very rich.

Chic is charm made on purpose
The book begins by linking clothes and femininity and placing their cults in Paris. Brainerd says chic has no exact match in English, and she uses it as the key to everything Parisian. It means coquetry, daring and charm, with a touch of absurdity added.
The Parisienne, she argues, does not trust her natural gifts. She is a coquette from her first communion dress to her last cap and shawl, and she takes endless pains to be charming. Critics describe the result as contrived. Brainerd agrees, then adds that the art behind the artifice is something to reckon with. Wit outlasts a complexion, and tact outlasts a figure. She admires the painted old ladies of Paris who flutter their fans, because they keep their quick minds and still amuse a room.
An old woman from a small Missouri town sits on a Champs-Élysées chair and watches hundreds of women lift their skirts to show silk petticoats. She thinks she has found the improper Frenchwomen she has read about. Brainerd explains that they are not bad, only French.
At a race meeting where King Alfonso is guest of honour, rain ruins the airy summer outfits. The women laugh instead of losing their tempers. One little countess says the dresses are ruined, but she has finally had a good look at her friends' ankles. Brainerd calls this sporting blood. Chic is charm made on purpose.

Domande su Nella fiera della vanità
What is In Vanity Fair by Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd about?
It is a lively portrait of Parisian fashion and society in the early 1900s. It follows the Parisienne through her year, covering dressmakers, saleswomen, races, sports, restaurants, seaside resorts, hunting parties, Monte Carlo and the American women who buy her clothes.
What does the word chic mean in this book?
Brainerd treats chic as a quality that no other language names exactly. It means charm, daring, coquetry and a touch of absurdity, achieved on purpose and worn with ease, and she says it sets Parisian women apart.
Who are Fifi and the Duchess?
They are two types, not single people. Fifi stands for the demi-mondaine of the Paris stage and cafés, and the Duchess for the aristocratic lady. Brainerd shows them meeting almost as equals at the races, competing in beautiful dresses.
When was In Vanity Fair written, and are the people real?
It was written in the early 1900s as a work of nonfiction. Brainerd names real dressmakers such as Paquin, Worth and Doeuillet, along with society leaders, restaurant owners and the Monte Carlo founder François Blanc, and illustrates her observations with scenes and dialogue.
Is In Vanity Fair easy to read?
Yes, the chapters are self-contained and each follows a clear place or occasion, such as the races or the Riviera. The tone is witty and direct, and the short scenes and dialogue make it easy to pick up at any chapter.
