Il canto della vita di Franz Schubert in short
Franz Schubert's Song of Life follows one man from a choir loft to the last years of his short life. Along the way you meet a stern father, a jealous composer, a first love who laughs, and a circle of poor, brilliant friends. Everything he suffers is turned into song, and every song is tied to a scene in the book.
What Il canto della vita di Franz Schubert is about
What does a boy do when his father wants a schoolmaster and his head is full of music? In this novel by Joseph Aug. Lux, young Franz Schubert sings up to high C in the court choir of Vienna, while a furious Italian composer snatches the notebook from his hands.
Lux, an Austrian writer who died in 1947, frees Schubert from the false picture of a sentimental drunkard. He shows a man who is shy, funny, warm and fierce about his art. Nearly every song is tied to a moment of his life, so you hear the music behind the story.
A chi è rivolto. Readers who love music, old Vienna and stories of friendship will feel at home here. It suits anyone curious about how a gifted, modest man turns joy and sorrow into art.

A choirboy no teacher can teach
The novel opens in a church gallery, where the court choirboys sing like the carved angels above them. One voice climbs to high C, and it belongs to Franzl Schubert. His conductor Ruczizka laughs that the dear Lord taught him, because there is nothing left to add.
The court composer Salieri catches the boy scribbling notes and seizes the pages. He finds a small piece built on a Mozart sonata. Salieri hated everything about Mozart, so he rages in Italian. Then, to the boy's confusion, he orders Ruczizka to drill him in counterpoint.
His father, the schoolmaster of Liechtental, answers with the cane. Yet he sees that the Imperial Chapel offers a free school place, and father and son walk to the city. Franz comes first in the examination and enters the Konvikt, a bare stone boarding school. Music and loyal friends like Spaun make the gray years bearable.
Talent shows itself early and finds its way even through harsh teachers.

How it ends (spoiler)
Franz gives his own concert in Vienna and earns a little money, but his health keeps failing. He moves to his brother's house and begins to fade. His friends visit, and he tells them that this is where it ends. He dies of typhoid fever, and he is buried near Beethoven. After the funeral one friend tells the others that Schubert's soul still sounds, and that his song belongs to the city he loved.
