Luce di Natale in short

Christmas Light follows one family in Bethlehem through a season of loss. A happy girl gives up her flowers for a hurt lamb. She enjoys a day of wonders in Jerusalem and then loses her sight.

What Luce di Natale is about

Four scarlet poppies sway in a Bethlehem garden on a soft summer afternoon. Eight-year-old Naomi has tended them for many days, one for her father, one for her mother, one for her brother Ezra, and the smallest for baby Jonas. Before long she will give every one of them away for the sake of a sickly lamb.

Christmas Light is a short novel for young readers by Ethel Calvert Phillips, who wrote for children in the early twentieth century. It sees the first Christmas from the edges, through ordinary people in Bethlehem when Caesar Augustus orders a census. You get a warm picture of village life, and a family you love before sorrow reaches it.

A chi è rivolto. Readers who enjoy Christmas tales of brothers and sisters and vivid scenes of ancient village life will love this book. It also suits families who read aloud together.

The story in 8 parts

Naomi's small garden holds her whole world

The story opens on a summer afternoon in Bethlehem, in a garden hardly bigger than a courtyard. Naomi has dark curls and a striped scarlet-and-yellow robe, and she loves this patch of ground as if it were a royal park. An orange tree shades a bench, a thorn hedge keeps the street out, and a grapevine climbs a trellis.

The house is a white box with one door and no windows.

Her father, Samuel, weaves veils for the Temple at Jerusalem. Her mother teaches her songs, prayers and the history of her people. Ezra, eleven, studies the Law and dreams of becoming a Temple shepherd. Baby Jonas crawls after everyone.

One small scene shows her heart. Naomi sits behind the myrtle bush with Jonas and begins to dig a secret well, so that her mother need never walk to the fountain again. A proud father and a patient mother have made her bold and curious in an age that wanted girls quiet.

Before the story tests her, the book shows how much a happy child has to lose.

  • Eli An old Temple shepherd who is Ezra's friend and watches the stars, sure that God's promised salvation is close at hand.
  • Jonas Naomi's baby brother, who crawls after her, helps dig her secret well and guides her steps when she cannot see.
  • Michmash A small gray donkey from the town of that name, given to Naomi by her aunt and trained by Ezra to droop his ears.

How it ends (spoiler)

In the stable, the baby leans forward and touches Naomi's eyes, and her sight returns. Ezra kneels with her before Mary and the child. Soon after, Ezra learns that Herod threatens the child. Jonas is sent away to safety, and Naomi gives her donkey Michmash and her scarlet cloak so the family can flee to Egypt. She watches them go and knows he will return as the Light of the whole world.
