Che cos’è questo libro

What becomes of a boy admitted to the Golden Fleece at twenty days old? Charles of Burgundy, born in Dijon in 1433, grows up believing he is made for greatness. He chases a crown between France and Germany, and he loses everything on a frozen field near Nancy.

Ruth Putnam, an American historian, wrote this biography in 1908. She lets the chroniclers who saw him speak, and adds letters from kings, merchants and travellers. You meet Philip the Good, the patient French king Louis XI, the weak emperor Frederick III and the Swiss armies, and you see why his age called him the Rash.

A child knighted in the cradle

Charles is born at Dijon in 1433, the only surviving legitimate heir of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Twenty days later he is carried into a room of the Order of the Golden Fleece and listed as a knight. His parents take the oath for him.

Philip founded the Order to honor chivalry, yet it became a circle of loyal followers who voted as their chief wished. He even admitted his illegitimate sons, though the rules forbade it. The infant knight is simply the boldest case of a court that bends its own rules.

Charles grows up strong and dark haired, and he loves stories of Alexander the Great. In 1435 the Treaty of Arras brings his father towns and freedom from homage. In 1440 the people of Bruges beg his father's pardon barefoot and bareheaded, and the boy sees a city humbled by ceremony.

The boy's world teaches him that rank and display command obedience.
