Che cos’è questo libro

Blown to Bits, or the Lonely Man of Rakata, was written by R. M. Ballantyne and published in 1889, six years after the Krakatoa eruption. He built it on the report of the Royal Society committee. You get an adventure story with real science inside it, and a gentle giant who lives in a cave under a restless mountain.

A storm of ash drives the Sunshine off course

Captain David Roy and his son Nigel pace the quarterdeck of the brig Sunshine, arguing gently about poetry. The captain says poetry belongs to his wife and nobody else. Nigel, fresh from college, insists he is no true sailor. Their teasing shows the warm bond that holds the whole book together.

Then the captain feels ash on his sleeve. He mutters that Vulcan must be cooking up a new brew near the Sunda Strait. He checks the barometer and orders all sail taken in. A gale roars out of the strait and drives the brig before it all night. By morning the foretopmast has snapped with a report like a cannon shot. The old man does not complain. He holds that nothing is a misfortune until it is proved one.

The damaged brig limps toward the Cocos-Keeling Islands, a coral ring around a still lagoon. On the way the captain tells the history of the place. A Scotsman named Ross claimed it and brought his family. Two cyclones flattened the settlement, and Ross's son, an engineer, rebuilt everything with steam mills, a school and neat plank cottages.

Nigel falls in love with the islands at first sight. The water glows with darting fish, and the islanders are gentle and hospitable. His father wants to leave as soon as a spare mast is rigged. Business first, he says, and pleasure afterward.

A ruined voyage becomes the first step of a much larger journey.
