You will enjoy this if you love comparing myths across cultures, tracing where familiar stories come from, or following a nineteenth century freethinker as he lines up scholars and sacred books.
Che cos’è questo libro
What if the story of Eden, with its tree and its serpent, were older than the people who wrote it down? In 1882 a Boston author named T. W. Doane put that question to his readers and spent a whole book answering it. Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions sets the tales of the Old and New Testaments beside the saviours and heroes of India, Egypt, Persia, Greece, China and Mexico.
Doane writes as a freethinker who wants every claim tested. You get his argument in his own order, with the tablets and scholars he cites, and you hear where he persuades and where later readers push back.

Genesis tells the Creation twice
Doane opens with Genesis, where he finds two accounts of creation set side by side. The first gives six days of work and a day of rest. The second begins at the fourth verse of the second chapter and tells a different order of events.
In the first, birds and beasts come before man, and man and woman are made together. In the second, the Lord God shapes man from dust, plants a garden in Eden, and only then forms the animals. The woman comes last, made from a rib.
Bishop Colenso lists six differences and notes that the first account names the Creator Elohim while the second says Jehovah Elohim. Even Dr. Kalisch, who defends the story, admits it would be dishonest to hide the difficulty.
Compare passages before you accept any single telling as plain history.

Questions about Miti biblici e loro paralleli nelle altre religioni
What is Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions about?
It compares stories from the Old and New Testaments, such as Eden, the Flood and the birth of Jesus, with similar tales from India, Egypt, Persia, Greece, China and Mexico, and argues that the biblical versions are not unique.
What are the parallels the book draws between Jesus and Crishna or Buddha?
Doane lists dozens of matching points, including a virgin mother, a guiding star, singing angels, a visit from wise men, a king who seeks the child, miracles, a death for others and a rising again.
Is Bible Myths a work of history or of opinion?
It is an argument from comparison. Doane cites ancient writers, clay tablets and nineteenth century scholars, then draws his own conclusions, which readers can weigh by following his references and quotations.
What is the main message of Bible Myths?
Doane argues that many biblical stories and Christian rites have older parallels in other religions, and that every belief should be tested by open comparison, a view he sums up with the words all truth is safe.
