Chapter 22 di 37 · 8 min per leggere: chapter
In Chapter 22, Passepartout discovers that Phileas Fogg and Aouda are absent from the Carnatic, and he recognizes Fix’s scheme to separate them. He reaches Yokohama without money, postpones asking the consuls for help, and spends the day wandering until hunger becomes his chief concern.
Cosa succede
- Passepartout struggles out of the opium den and boards the Carnatic just before departure, then collapses.
- After recovering, he searches for Phileas Fogg and learns from the purser that neither his master nor Aouda is aboard.
- He remembers the changed departure time, blames himself and Fix, and worries that his master faces ruin or arrest.
- With his passage prepaid but no money, he eats generously during the voyage and reaches Yokohama on November 13.
- He delays seeking consular help and explores the European district, Benten, and the surrounding fields.
- Unable to obtain supper, he returns to the streets and harbor, watching nighttime activity until the crowds disappear.
