About this book

What if the Bible is not one book, but a library of stories, laws, poems, and searching questions?

The King James Version of the Bible gathers law, history, poetry, prophecy, gospel, and letters. Genesis opens with an account of creation and a family. Exodus follows the descendants of Jacob into slavery in Egypt. From Moses to the history books, these writings explore how a people takes shape, lives under law, and faces a nation's rise and fall.

Job brings searching questions into poetry, while the prophets call for justice and promise hope. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John tell the life of Jesus in four distinct accounts. Acts, the letters, and Revelation carry the collection onward. Read across these sections to explore writings rooted in ancient Israel and the early Christian church, and an English text that shapes the language.

The Bible is a library, not one book

The word Bible comes from a Greek phrase meaning the books. That is a good guide to what you are holding. The King James Version contains sixty-six books in its Protestant canon, thirty-nine in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New. They differ in age, author, style and purpose, and they were gathered into one volume over many centuries.

What is the King James Version of the Bible?

It is the English translation of the Bible published in 1611 under King James the First of England. It was made by a team of scholars from the Hebrew and Greek, and it became the standard English Bible for centuries.

Why was the King James Bible written?

King James agreed at the Hampton Court Conference in 1604 to commission a new version. The aim was a single English Bible for use in all churches, free of the partisan margin notes found in the Geneva Bible.

How many books are in the King James Bible?

The Protestant canon has sixty-six books, thirty-nine in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New. The 1611 printing also included the Apocrypha, a set of additional books, though most modern copies leave them out.
