About this book
What if love arrives when you no longer expect anyone to choose you?
In Sonnets from the Portuguese, Elizabeth Barrett Browning turns an unexpected courtship into forty-four intimate love poems. She lives with illness in her father’s London home and does not expect to be loved. As Robert Browning courts her, the speaker of these sonnets faces a difficult question: can she trust affection she scarcely believes she deserves?
The sequence moves through hesitation, fear, and growing trust, with love weighed against death, family, and faith. From the opening poems, shadowed by grief, to the declaration beginning “How do I love thee?”, Browning gives doubt as much room as devotion. The tight Petrarchan sonnet form holds feelings that are anything but simple.

A shut-in poet receives an unexpected letter
Elizabeth Barrett was already a respected poet when the story behind these sonnets begins. She lived with her family at 50 Wimpole Street in London, and for years she spent most of her time in one upstairs room. Her health was poor, and her father kept a strict hold on the household. She read widely, wrote constantly, and saw few visitors.
In January 1845 she received a letter from Robert Browning, a fellow poet who admired her work. He wrote that he loved her verses, and he said he loved her too, in a way. A long exchange of letters followed. Hundreds survive, and they show two writers growing close on paper before they had properly met.

What are Sonnets from the Portuguese about?
They are forty-four love poems that follow a woman's path from doubt and sorrow to trust and joy. The speaker slowly accepts that a man truly loves her, and she explores what love means and how far it reaches.
Why are they called Sonnets from the Portuguese?
The title makes the poems sound like translations, which hid how personal they were. A common explanation is that Robert Browning called her his little Portuguese, so the title was a private joke between them.
Are the sonnets about a true story?
Yes. They were written between 1845 and 1846 while Robert Browning courted Elizabeth Barrett. They were published in 1850, after the couple had married in secret and moved to Italy.
