About this book
How does a boy clear his father's name when the enemy stands close to the king?
In Howard Pyle's Men of Iron, Myles Falworth carries a burden he does not choose. His blind father, Lord Falworth, lives under a charge of treason. In the England of Henry the Fourth, powerful enemies and household rivalries stand between Myles and his hope of restoring his family's honor. Courage alone cannot prepare him for the struggle.
Sent to the Earl of Mackworth's castle, Myles begins the hard work of a page and squire. Sir James Lee drills him in arms, while Walter Blunt becomes a rival among the boys. Sword practice, heavy riding gear and loyal friendships shape his days. He must learn not only how to fight, but how to pursue justice by honest means.

A blind lord's loyalty brings his family ruin
The story begins in 1400, soon after Henry the Fourth takes the English crown. Nobles who lost power plot to kill the new king. The plot fails, and its leaders are hunted down. Lord Gilbert Falworth, a blind baron, had no part in it.
His young son Myles is eight when Sir John Dale gallops into the courtyard on an exhausted horse. Sir John is a family friend and one of the hunted men. The next morning a black knight rides in with soldiers, and Sir John is struck down with an iron mace before the boy's eyes.
