A blind lord's loyalty brings his family ruin

The story begins in 1400, soon after Henry the Fourth takes the English crown. Nobles who lost power plot to kill the new king. The plot fails, and its leaders are hunted down. Lord Gilbert Falworth, a blind baron, had no part in it.

His young son Myles is eight when Sir John Dale gallops into the courtyard on an exhausted horse. Sir John is a family friend and one of the hunted men. The next morning a black knight rides in with soldiers, and Sir John is struck down with an iron mace before the boy's eyes.

That night old Diccon Bowman, a faithful retainer, wraps the boy in a sheepskin. Prior Edward waits beyond the frozen moat with horses. The family rides away for good and settles in a low thatched farmhouse on priory land. The baron is now an outlaw whose lands are gone.

One loyal act can cost a family everything.
