About this book
A bird on a garden path, a fly in a silent room: how much can a small poem hold?
In Poems by Emily Dickinson, Three Series, Complete, short lyrics turn familiar sights toward questions of life, love, death and eternity. The First, Second and Third Series bring together poems in which a carriage stops for a traveler, a bird walks through a garden, and a speaker prefers being nobody to somebody.
Emily Dickinson's short lines, hymn-like stanzas and slant rhymes invite you to slow down and listen. Wild Nights gives longing the image of a loved one's harbor. Elsewhere, death becomes a visitor, a room or a pause, while faith, doubt and solitude leave questions open rather than neatly settled.

In short
What would you write if you were sure nobody would ever read it? Emily Dickinson, who lived almost her whole life in Amherst, Massachusetts, answered with a vast heap of poems.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A private woman wrote for no audience
Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst in 1830 and died in the same town in 1886. Her father was the leading lawyer there. Once a year he held a large reception, and she appeared as a gracious hostess. Then she withdrew again, as if she lived in a convent.
Her seclusion grew with time. For years she did not set foot beyond the doorstep. She hid her mind as she hid her person, from all but a few friends. Thomas Wentworth Higginson wrote to her for years and met her face to face only twice.

What are Emily Dickinson's poems about?
They cover four broad themes, which the three series use as headings: life, love, nature, and time and eternity. Within these she writes about hope, loss, birds and bees, seasons, faith, doubt and death, usually in short poems of a few stanzas.
Why are Emily Dickinson's poems arranged in three series?
The poems were found after her death in 1886 and published in three volumes, in 1890, 1891 and 1896. Each volume was sorted under the same four headings, so you can move from one series to the next by theme.
Why did Emily Dickinson use so many dashes?
Her handwritten pages used dashes in place of most punctuation, and she capitalised important words. A dash works as a breath or a pause, so reading aloud shows where the thought turns and where a word is meant to weigh.
