Punkt 1 von 7

Poems written for no audience at all

These poems come from a woman who lived almost entirely at home. Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst in 1830 and died there in 1886. Her father was a leading lawyer and the treasurer of the town college, and she stepped out of her seclusion only for his yearly reception.

Her sister found the poems after her death. Many were copied neatly onto note paper and tied into small bundles of six or eight sheets. Friends who had received poems in letters lent them to the editors, Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, so different versions of one poem could be compared.

The poems appeared in three series, with prefaces by the editors. Most had no titles, so the editors supplied them, and they also smoothed her dashes into ordinary punctuation. Keep this in mind as you read. You are hearing a private voice that never expected a crowd.

Questions about Gedichte von Emily Dickinson, alle drei Reihen

What are the poems of Emily Dickinson about?

They cover life, love, nature, and time and eternity. Typical subjects are hope, grief, a bee, a bird, a snake, a letter from a lover, and the moment of death, all in short, vivid poems.

Why are the poems grouped into three series?

The poems came out in three volumes, edited by Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, then by Todd alone. Each series has four sections: Life, Love, Nature, and Time and Eternity.

Did Emily Dickinson give her poems titles?

Mostly not. The editors say the titles were supplied by them, though she named a few herself, such as A Country Burial, A Thunder-Storm and The Humming-Bird.

Is Emily Dickinson easy to read?

Her poems are short, often four lines to a stanza, and they use everyday objects like bees, clocks and doors. Reading a few aloud, one at a time, makes them clear and rewarding.

What is the main message of her poetry?

She looks closely at small things and finds large meanings in them. Joy and pain arrive together, nature and death are part of the same world, and honesty about feeling matters most.
