About this book
What if saving your father means searching the oceans for a ship condemned never to reach harbour?
In Frederick Marryat's The Phantom Ship, a sailor's legend becomes a family's burden. Captain Vanderdecken swears he will round the Cape of Good Hope despite a terrible storm. His oath leaves him and his crew doomed to wander the seas. His son, Philip Vanderdecken, grows up beneath that curse, while his mother, Catherine, fears for the family and longs to keep him safe.
Philip takes to sea with a purpose beyond trade or fame: to find the phantom vessel and free his father and its crew. His search carries him far from Europe into the waters and lands of the East. Amine, a woman with unusual gifts, becomes his partner and shares his quest. Around them, practical seamanship meets strange powers, love, and the dread of an endless voyage.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A dying mother hands her son a curse
The story opens in a neat cottage near Terneuse. Philip Vanderdecken, nineteen and powerfully built, wants to go to sea with his uncle, because the family is close to starving. His widowed mother begs him to stay. She will not say why, and the front parlor has been sealed for almost seventeen years.
Pressed by Philip, she collapses. The miserly doctor Poots says she has a day or two at most, and in the same breath asks who will pay his fee.
