Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who enjoy ghost legends, storms at sea and ships under sail will find plenty here. It suits anyone who likes a brave hero and a daring heroine.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What would you do if your dying mother told you that your father is neither alive nor dead? In the Dutch town of Terneuse, a young man named Philip Vanderdecken hears exactly that. His father, a sea captain, swore a terrible oath off the Cape of Good Hope and now sails on, cursed, until the Day of Judgment.

The Phantom Ship was written by Frederick Marryat, a former naval officer turned novelist. He built it on the old sea legend of the Flying Dutchman. You get a ghost story, a love story, a tale of shipwreck and a sharp look at greed, faith and fate, with a surprising streak of humour.

A dying mother hands her son a curse

The story opens in a neat cottage near Terneuse. Philip Vanderdecken, nineteen and powerfully built, wants to go to sea with his uncle, because the family is close to starving. His widowed mother begs him to stay. She will not say why, and the front parlor has been sealed for almost seventeen years.

Pressed by Philip, she collapses. The miserly doctor Poots says she has a day or two at most, and in the same breath asks who will pay his fee.

In her last night she tells the secret. Seventeen years ago her husband came through the window in a gale, cold as ice. He said he was neither dead nor alive. Off the Cape he had blasphemed and struck a pilot who drowned. Then he swore on the relic of the Holy Cross, which she wears, to round the Cape even if he must sail until Judgment Day. The oath was answered in thunder and flame, and he left a sealed letter on the table.

A secret kept for years can become the inheritance that shapes a whole life.
