About this book

What if earning your own living means taking responsibility for children you have almost no power to teach?

Agnes Grey leaves her sheltered home determined to help her family through money trouble. A clergyman’s daughter with courage and firm principles, she believes she can make a good teacher. But work with the Bloomfields brings spoiled children, careless parents, and blame. Her kindness meets a household that expects results while denying her the authority to achieve them.

In Anne Brontë’s novel, Agnes tells her own story with plain honesty. The wealthy homes of the Bloomfields and the Murrays expose the loneliness of a woman paid to serve but rarely treated with respect. Beyond those houses, Nancy Brown’s friendship and Mr Weston’s care for the poor offer a different measure of worth: attention, kindness, and concern for others.

What you’ll discover

  • Courage without power Follow a young woman trying to do honest work when her employers undermine her.

Is it for you?

What is Agnes Grey about?

It follows a young clergyman's daughter who takes work as a governess after her family loses money. She meets difficult employers and unruly children in two households, and the book shows how she keeps her principles and dignity.

Is Agnes Grey based on a true story?

It is fiction, but Anne Brontë drew on her own experience as a governess in Yorkshire homes. Many of the humiliations and frustrations Agnes meets reflect what Anne saw and felt. It was published in 1847.

Why did Anne Brontë write under the name Acton Bell?

The Brontë sisters used male-sounding pen names to avoid prejudice against women writers. Charlotte was Currer Bell, Emily was Ellis Bell, and Anne was Acton Bell. Agnes Grey appeared under that name in 1847.
