Für wen es gedacht ist
Readers who like ghost tales told with wit and atmosphere, fans of Victorian Christmas fiction, and anyone who enjoys a narrator who tries to explain the strange and fails.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Three Ghost Stories gathers three tales by Charles Dickens, who died in 1870. They are The Haunted House, The Trial for Murder and The Signalman. Dickens wrote such tales for the Christmas season, when readers liked a shiver beside the fire. Each one comes in a different voice. The first is comic and then tender, the second is a cool legal case with a dead witness, and the third is a quiet meeting beside a railway line.
What do you get from them? Three narrators who tell you what they saw and then refuse to explain it. You meet a rented house with a ringing bell, a banker called to jury service, and a signalman who fears a red light. Each tale also asks what a ghost really is: a trick of the mind, a warning, or a memory that will not let go. Let us begin with the house, the sister who has a plan, and the party of friends she gathers.

A rented house and a sister's plan
The first tale begins in daylight, which is the point. The narrator, John, steps off a night train, still irritated by a fellow passenger who spent the journey taking down messages from spirits. Walking on, he comes to a damp, neglected house called the Poplars, shadowed by six tall trees, with a sign saying it is to let.
In the village inn, the landlord will say only that he would not sleep there. Bells ring with nobody ringing them, and feet tread about when nobody is there. A stable hand named Ikey tells of a hooded woman with an owl, said to have been murdered while the owl hooted. One bell in the house is labelled Master B., and it rings most often. John has already lived in a haunted Italian palace in peace, so he rents the house for six months.
He moves in with his sister Patty, a deaf stableman called Bottles, a bloodhound named Turk and several servants. Within hours the Odd Girl, a young orphan hired as a helper, sees Eyes and falls into hysterics. The cook weeps, the housemaid Streaker weeps larger tears, and fear spreads from room to room. John comes to suspect that Ikey and the Odd Girl make some of the noises themselves, even while they truly fear the house.
Then Patty proposes a bold cure: have no servants at all. Bottles, who hears nothing, stays, and a chosen party of friends will live there for three months, cooking and cleaning for themselves. They include the sailor Jack Governor, Captain Nat Beaver, the solicitor Mr. Undery, young Alfred Starling and the reformer Belinda Bates. They draw lots for rooms, John gets Master B.'s, and all agree to say nothing of strange events until Twelfth Night.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Drei Geistergeschichten
What are the three ghost stories by Charles Dickens in this book?
The book holds The Haunted House, The Trial for Murder and The Signalman. The first is a comic and tender tale about a rented house, the second follows a juror haunted by a murdered man, and the third is set beside a railway tunnel.
Who is Master B. in The Haunted House?
Master B. is the ghost said to haunt a small triangular garret. A bell labelled with his initial rings most often. Nobody knows what the B stands for, and the narrator, who sleeps in the room, spends many nights guessing.
What does the red light mean in The Signalman?
The red light is the danger signal beside the mouth of a railway tunnel. It is the spot where the signalman sees a figure that waves and cries out, so the light comes to stand for warning and dread.
Are these stories easy to read in one sitting?
Each tale is short, told in a plain first-person voice, and moves from scene to scene with lively talk. You can read one tale at a time, and the shifts between humor and chill keep each story fresh.
What is the main idea behind these ghost stories?
Dickens uses ghosts to ask how people handle things they cannot explain. Fear, memory, duty and doubt run through all three, and each narrator tries to find a reasonable answer before facing what he has seen.
