Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Doomsman is a novel of the year 2015, ninety years after a sudden catastrophe called the Great Change has ended the old world. Van Tassel Sutphen wrote it as an adventure set among the ruins of New York, and it gives you a young hero, a feud, a lost science and a city that guards its secrets.

The land has fallen back into forest and marsh. Farmers live behind timber stockades, townsfolk huddle in walled towns, and the outlaw descendants of old convicts rule the empty city they call Doom. The book follows Constans, the son of a stockade lord, from a quiet beach to the streets of the forbidden city. Along the way it asks what a person owes to revenge, to friendship and to love.

You will meet a smiling enemy in velvet, a girl whose mother's message crosses the sea in a bottle, and a priest who serves a god made of wire and iron. You will also find books that still hold the old knowledge. The story begins on a bright May morning, with a boy, a pair of binoculars and a spear in the sand.

Punkt 1 von 10

A boy, a book and a spear

The story opens on a yellow beach where Constans, son of Gavan of the Greenwood Keep, sits on a log and stares across the water. He is about seventeen, slender and thoughtful, and he looks at a dark mass on the horizon. In his hand are binoculars with one broken lens, and on his knee lies a child's history of the United States, with his name written across the top of a page.

He compares a picture of lower New York with the shadow on the sea and decides they are one and the same. The Forgotten City and Doom the Forbidden are the same place. Then a spear flashes down behind him and he barely escapes. A man on horseback is waiting further along the track.

The chase ends at a rotting bridge over the Swiftwater. Constans, safe on the far bank, shoots an arrow marked with a scarlet tanager feather into the rider's arm. The rider is calm and polite, dressed in claret velvet with a lace collar and an ostrich plume. He admires the feather, promises another meeting, and rides away.

Constans runs for the keep, where a bell is ringing. The Doomsmen have landed from the sea. The boy is proud of drawing the first blood, and ashamed too, for his sister Issa is missing and he knows of a secret gap in the palisade that he did not confess.

Before the story goes further, the book pauses to describe the world. A learned historian explains the Great Change and the long fall into barbarism. The Painted Men, the House People and the Doomsmen share the land. The Doomsmen are the heirs of freed convicts who seized New York, and an old renegade named Dom Gillian once taught them to fight as one band.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
