Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Adriani is a novel by George Sand, written in 1853 and dedicated to the actress Madame Albert Bignon. In her dedication, Sand says what she wants to prove: that great love belongs to strong, active, fully grown people, and not only to dreamers, loners and the weak. The book tests that idea through two people. One is a singer and composer who hides his fame behind his family name. The other is a young widow who has shut herself away in a ruined house in the hills of the Vivarais.
The story begins with a comic frame. A valet named Comtois keeps a journal and writes to his wife, and he cannot work out who his new master is. He decides the man is a fool, an adventurer, a doctor and a fraud in turn. Behind his muddled guesses, the reader slowly learns the truth. You get a love story, a portrait of a family bound by rank and religion, a warning about money, and a look at what it costs an artist to stand before the public.
The novel moves between letters, journals and narration, and between southern France and Paris. Let us start with the stranger who arrives at a country house and hears a woman singing in the dusk.

A valet who cannot read his master
The story opens with letters and journal pages from Comtois, a valet who has lately left a count's service. He has been hired by a handsome gentleman who calls himself only M. d'Argères. The man pays well, speaks softly and gives no hint of his business or his title.
Comtois is the kind of servant who judges everyone by rank. When his master has no title, he is uneasy. When the man says little, Comtois decides he has few ideas. When the man sings an Italian tune beautifully at bedtime, Comtois concludes he is simple.
When Comtois calls him Monsieur le Comte and then Monsieur le Marquis, the master asks him why he uses those titles, and then walks off without an answer. This only deepens the valet's doubts. He wonders if the man is an eccentric, a trickster or a madman. Each new journal entry shows a theory collapsing and a new one forming.
These pages are funny, and they do real work. They show a man who hides his true self behind plain manners. They also set up a pattern that returns through the book, in which the valet sees only the surface while the reader sees the heart. The travellers drift down the Rhône to the country house of Mauzères, where a baron who writes verse is waiting to read his poems to a guest.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
