Shrnutí knihy Work: Chapter 3

Chapter 3 z 20 · 24 min. na přečtení kapitoly

In Chapter 3, Christie enters the theater through Lucy’s help, rises from spectacle performer to salaried actress, and grows increasingly absorbed in applause while their friendship breaks under jealousy. During her benefit performance, compassion replaces resentment, and she saves Lucy from falling machinery but suffers an injury that leaves her unconscious.

Co se stane

  1. After other work proves unavailable, Christie accepts Lucy’s offer to perform as an Amazon queen and succeeds despite her fears.
  2. Her singing, character performances, and Kent’s support bring promotion and a regular salary of thirty dollars a week.
  3. Lucy resents Christie’s advancement, while Christie becomes vain, selfish, and increasingly dependent on public praise.
  4. Before her benefit, Christie recognizes troubling changes in herself but defiantly chooses fame over happiness.
  5. During Masks and Faces, Lucy’s emotional performance convinces Christie that jealousy over St. George deepens their quarrel.
  6. Christie pulls Lucy away from falling stage machinery, suffers a serious injury, and remains unconscious as the audience applauds her courage.
