Who Badger is

Badger lives beneath the roots of the Wild Wood, away from the busy life of the river. He dislikes visitors, and his gruff manner makes him seem less welcoming than he really is.

When Rat and Mole arrive lost in the snow, he brings them into his warm home. He lets them eat and dry off before asking questions, showing the kindness beneath his stern manner.

What Badger wants

Badger wants to help Toad escape the dangerous hold that motor cars have over him. He hears about Toad's craze during winter and says he will deal with it when winter is over.

When Toad keeps wrecking cars and refuses to stop, Badger joins Rat and Mole in taking action. He speaks sternly to Toad and asks him to promise to give up motor cars.

Badger and the others in the story

For Rat and Mole, Badger's home offers safety after the fear and confusion of the Wild Wood. For Toad, his friendship takes a firmer form, with concern expressed through direct demands rather than easy agreement.
