Chapter 18 z 28 · 4 min. na přečtení kapitoly

In Chapter 18, the speaker argues that a prince must combine lawful conduct with force and deception, breaking promises when keeping them threatens his interests and their original reasons no longer apply. He makes the appearance of virtue central to maintaining power, because most people judge rulers by visible conduct and successful results.

  2. Chiron illustrates the ruler’s double nature, while the fox and lion illustrate cunning and force.
  3. The speaker permits broken promises under changed conditions and presents Alexander the Sixth as a successful deceiver.
  4. A prince should appear virtuous but remain ready to act against virtue when preserving his state requires it.
  5. Public judgment rests mainly on appearances and outcomes, allowing successful rulers to gain praise for their methods.
  6. An unnamed contemporary prince preaches peace and honesty while acting against both to preserve his position.
