Chapter 5 z 45 · Book 1: The Shimerdas · 5 min. na přečtení kapitoly

In Chapter 5, Ántonia tells the narrator that her father finds companionship with two Russian settlers, and she takes him to visit their home. Peter welcomes the children with melons and music, while his care for Pavel and his brief mention of trouble in Russia reveal hardship beneath his cheerful hospitality.

Co se stane

  1. Ántonia celebrates her father’s friendship with Pavel and Peter, whose speech she can partly understand.
  2. The narrator contrasts Pavel’s sickly, restless appearance with Peter’s friendly manner and describes their isolation before the Shimerdas arrive.
  3. Ántonia and the narrator visit Peter, who shows them his cow, chickens, garden, and comfortable home.
  4. Peter shares ripe melons and says that trouble drives him from Russia, where he imagines having a daughter.
  5. Peter plays his harmonica, then gives the children cucumbers and milk for Mrs. Shimerda.
