Who Michael Moon is
Michael Moon lives among the guests at Beacon House, the boarding house where Innocent Smith makes his unexpected arrival. He is a gloomy young man whose cleverness helps him keep joy at a distance. His mood belongs to a household accustomed to talking about its troubles and the dullness of the world.
Michael Moon and the others in the story
Innocent Smith brings a different way of living into the house, treating ordinary things as reasons for delight. Michael Moon is drawn to this stranger, even while Smith's high spirits annoy him. Their contrast gives a personal shape to the book's argument between habitual gloom and gratitude for being alive.
How Michael Moon changes
Smith does not try to change the guests through lectures, but his actions make them question their own outlook. For Michael Moon, the early disturbance is mixed, since he feels both resistance and the pull of Smith's energy. He offers a glimpse of what happens when a clever, gloomy person meets someone who refuses to take life for granted.
