Chapter 9 z 38 · Čtení chapter zabere 14 min.

In Chapter 9, typhus spreads through Lowood, giving Jane unusual freedom while Helen Burns suffers separately from consumption, and Jane secretly visits her dying friend at night. Helen expresses trust in God and an afterlife, while Jane struggles with uncertainty; they fall asleep together, and Helen is found dead at dawn.

Co se stane

  1. Spring transforms Lowood’s grounds, but typhus spreads among pupils weakened by hunger and neglected colds.
  2. Classes stop, and Jane enjoys outdoor freedom, better food, and Mary Ann Wilson’s company while Miss Temple tends the sick.
  3. Helen suffers from consumption rather than typhus, and Jane initially misunderstands the seriousness of her illness.
  4. After learning that Helen is dying, Jane secretly leaves her dormitory at night and finds her in Miss Temple’s room.
  5. Helen comforts Jane with her faith in God, and the two fall asleep embracing.
  6. Miss Temple finds Helen dead at dawn; the narrator describes her grave and its marble marker.
