In Chapter 37, Jane finds Edward Fairfax Rochester at Ferndean, comforts him in his blindness, and explains her independence and her refusal of St. John Rivers. She accepts Rochester’s marriage proposal, while his account of hearing her distant reply confirms a mysterious experience she privately recognizes and chooses not to discuss.

Co se stane

  1. Jane reaches secluded Ferndean and watches Rochester struggle to find his way outdoors before entering the house.
  2. She replaces Mary with the water tray, reveals herself, and promises Rochester companionship and care.
  3. The next morning, Jane recounts her experiences, and Rochester becomes jealous of St. John Rivers.
  4. Jane explains that she does not love Rivers and accepts Rochester’s proposal despite his fears about his injuries.
  5. Rochester expresses repentance and describes calling Jane’s name and hearing her answer four nights earlier.
  6. Jane privately recognizes the matching experience, keeps silent, and guides Rochester home through the wood.
