In Chapter 23, Jane faces the prospect of leaving Thornfield, declares her love and equality, and accepts Mr. Rochester’s proposal after he denies intending to marry Miss Ingram. Their joy accompanies a violent storm, and Adèle reports the next morning that lightning has split the chestnut tree beneath which they sit.

Co se stane

  2. Rochester claims he intends to marry Miss Ingram and offers Jane a teaching position in Ireland.
  3. Distressed by separation, Jane declares her love and insists that poverty and social position do not diminish her spiritual equality.
  4. Rochester proposes, denies loving Miss Ingram, and explains that he tests her interest by spreading a rumor about his reduced wealth.

  6. The next morning, Adèle tells Jane that lightning strikes the orchard’s chestnut tree during the night and splits it.
