Shrnutí Ivanhoe: Chapter 37

Chapter 37 z 44 · Čtení chapter zabere 20 min.

In Chapter 37, Rebecca faces a Templar tribunal that treats her healing, Jewish customs, and fabricated testimony as evidence of witchcraft while excusing Brian de Bois-Guilbert. After his cryptic reference to a scroll directs her to its advice, she asserts her innocence and demands trial by combat, opening a possible defense against condemnation.

Co se stane

  1. Beaumanoir frames Bois-Guilbert’s misconduct as the effect of Rebecca’s supposed spells and invites witnesses to testify.
  2. Malvoisin protects himself through carefully shaped testimony, while Bois-Guilbert refuses to answer the accusations directly.
  3. Higg describes Rebecca’s generous medical care, but Beaumanoir and two physicians treat her effective medicine as evidence of forbidden practices.
  4. Rebecca unveils herself, and two coached soldiers offer distorted or impossible stories that the tribunal accepts.
  5. Rebecca appeals to Bois-Guilbert to deny the charges, but he only directs her attention to a scroll.
  6. Reading its advice, Rebecca destroys the scroll, claims trial by combat, and throws down her glove.
