In Chapter 22, Reginald Front-de-Bœuf threatens Isaac of York with burning torture unless he pays a huge ransom, and Isaac agrees under pressure. When Isaac learns that Rebecca is given to Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert, he refuses payment without her safe return, until a bugle interrupts the preparations for torture.

  2. The slaves prepare a charcoal fire beneath iron bars, and Isaac agrees to pay rather than face burning torture.
  3. Front-de-Bœuf refuses to include Isaac’s traveling companions in the ransom agreement.
  4. Isaac proposes sending Rebecca to collect the money, but Front-de-Bœuf reveals that he gives her to Bois-Guilbert.
  5. Isaac begs for Rebecca’s safety, then refuses any payment when Front-de-Bœuf refuses to reverse his promise.
  6. The slaves begin stripping Isaac for torture, but a bugle and calls for Front-de-Bœuf interrupt them.
