Shrnutí Ivanhoe: Chapter 14

Chapter 14 z 44 · Čtení chapter zabere 13 min.

In Chapter 14, Prince John entertains Saxon leaders at Ashby Castle to gain their support, but he and his courtiers ruin the effort by mocking their guests. Cedric answers with a toast to Richard the Lion-Hearted, exposes divisions among the company, and leaves John fearful that his followers are deserting him.

Co se stane

  1. Prince John prepares a lavish banquet and welcomes Cedric and Athelstane as part of his effort to gain Saxon support.
  2. Norman guests ridicule the Saxons’ clothing, table manners, and appetite while John struggles to hide his anxiety.
  3. Cedric rejects a toast to Ivanhoe, condemning his son's disobedience and acceptance of land held through feudal service.
  4. John confirms Front-de-Bœuf’s possession of Ivanhoe, and the courtiers insult the Saxons until Cedric sharply answers them.
  5. Ignoring Fitzurse’s suggestion to honor John, Cedric toasts Richard the Lion-Hearted and then leaves with Athelstane and other Saxons.
  6. As guests disperse, John fears abandonment, while Fitzurse and De Bracy undertake to steady his wavering supporters.
