Shrnutí Flatland: Section 2

Section 2 z 22 · Part 1: This World · Čtení section zabere 4 min.

In Section 2, the narrator explains how Flatland’s inhabitants find directions, receive light, and build houses suited to their environment. His account also reveals restrictions on scientific inquiry, separate entrances for men and women, and laws that favor pentagonal buildings to protect travelers from sharp corners.

Co se stane

  1. A slight southward attraction, rain from the north, and the alignment of houses help inhabitants find their way.
  2. The narrator describes losing his bearings and explains the custom of giving women the northern side of a street.
  3. Constant light makes windows unnecessary, but investigations into its source meet taxation and then prohibition.
  4. The narrator claims to understand light’s three-dimensional source, although his countrymen mock him.
  5. Pentagonal houses have separate eastern and western entrances for women and men.
  6. Safety laws restrict sharp building corners, making pentagonal houses standard except for rare surviving square houses.
