Shrnutí Ethics: Part 12

Part 12 z 17 · Part 2: On the Nature and Origin of the Mind · Čtení part zabere 2 min.

In General Definition of the Emotions, the speaker defines a passive emotion as a confused idea that expresses a change in bodily power and directs thought toward a particular thing. The explanation distinguishes this change from conscious comparison with the past and connects the definition with pleasure, pain, and desire.

Co se stane

  1. The speaker defines passive emotion through a confused idea that expresses bodily power and directs thought.
  2. The explanation links mental passivity to inadequate ideas and says bodily ideas chiefly indicate the condition of our own body.
  3. A change in bodily power does not require the mind to compare present and past conditions.
  4. The mind changes in perfection as its affirmation of bodily existence involves more or less reality.
  5. The definition covers pleasure and pain through changes in power, and desire through the direction of thought.
