  1. Lanyon receives Jekyll’s urgent letter and agrees to retrieve a drawer despite suspecting that his friend is insane.
  2. A locksmith opens Jekyll’s cabinet door, and Lanyon takes the drawer home, examining its powders, liquid, and experimental records.
  3. At midnight, a small stranger arrives wearing oversized clothes and urgently asks for the drawer.
  4. The visitor mixes the chemicals and offers Lanyon a choice between remaining ignorant and witnessing an extraordinary revelation.
  5. Lanyon chooses to watch, and the stranger drinks the mixture and transforms into Henry Jekyll.
  6. Lanyon describes his continuing terror and reports Jekyll’s admission that the visitor is Hyde, sought as Carew’s murderer.
