Chapter 14 z 34 · Book 2: The Fall of Harmachis · Čtení chapter zabere 13 min.

In Chapter 14, Harmachis rejects Charmion’s love and enters Cleopatra’s chamber intending to kill her, while armed supporters wait outside the palace. Cleopatra defeats his purpose through song, intimacy, and drugged wine, then removes his dagger and spares his life as proof of her victory over a royal rival.

  2. Harmachis insists that they can only be cousins and friends, and Charmion leads him toward Cleopatra.
  3. Cleopatra keeps Harmachis under observation, preventing his intended attack while dismissing his written forecast.
  4. Her singing and embraces weaken his resolve, and her kiss makes him forget his religious and political duties.
  5. Harmachis drinks drugged wine, loses the power to move, and watches Cleopatra take his dagger.
  6. Cleopatra briefly threatens his life, then spares him to display her triumph as he loses consciousness.
