The Buddha on money

The Buddha’s teachings connected the topic of money with generosity and freedom from craving. He taught that giving countered stinginess, that craving caused suffering, and that people should loosen their attachment to things that could not last. These teachings placed the emphasis on conduct and the mind rather than wealth itself. Giving belonged to his broader teaching about overcoming harmful habits, while freedom from craving was part of the path toward calm and release from suffering.
Giving interrupted a harmful pattern
In the Dhammapada, giving appeared alongside meeting anger with calm and harmful conduct with goodness. Generosity therefore belonged to a broader pattern: a person opposed a harmful habit through a different kind of action rather than repeating it.
Thought shaped suffering and happiness
The Dhammapada began with the importance of the mind, connecting the quality of thought with suffering and happiness. This supplied the wider setting for its teaching on stinginess: outward conduct belonged together with the training of thought.
Training required each person’s effort
The Buddha taught that no person could purify another. Generosity stood within a path that also called for careful awareness, restraint and personal effort. Giving was one part of that training, alongside patience, kindness and attention to the mind.
