The Buddha on friendship

Tuto stránku vytvořila umělá inteligence na základě našich knižních shrnutí. Nenapsal ji the Buddha.

The Buddha valued friendship with wise people because such company supported careful awareness and the path toward calm and freedom. He connected good companionship with the effort to live thoughtfully rather than drift through life. Friendship belonged within a wider teaching of kindness, patience and responsibility. Yet he placed a clear limit on what companions could do: they could support another person’s training, but they could not do that work on that person’s behalf.

Wise company supported careful living

In the Dhammapada, the call to choose wise company appeared alongside warnings against neglecting attention and delaying effort. Companionship thus had a place within a larger practice of staying aware, acting carefully and continuing the work of training.

Patience shaped conduct toward others

His teaching about anger gave friendship a wider ethical setting. He taught that hostility was not overcome by returning hostility, and that calm and generosity answered anger and stinginess. These qualities concerned how a person treated others, not only the choice of companions.

Each person remained responsible

The Dhammapada described a well-trained person as their own protector. Its chapter on the self also warned against neglecting personal training for another person’s sake. Helping others therefore did not remove the importance of attending to personal conduct and purpose.
