About this book
What if your escape from a witch leads straight to a kingdom where knitting needles threaten a throne?
Tip has had enough of serving the witch Mombi. When her magic powder brings his pumpkin-headed creation to life, the boy finds a companion in Jack Pumpkinhead—and a reason to run. In L. Frank Baum’s The Marvelous Land of Oz, their escape opens a road full of strange inventions and unlikely friends.
But the Emerald City offers no quiet refuge. General Jinjur and her army of girls challenge the Scarecrow’s rule, drawing Tip into a struggle for the throne. With the gentle Tin Woodman and the boastful Woggle-Bug among the travelers, this quick, funny adventure asks what makes someone fit to rule.

A boy builds a man from pumpkin
Tip lives in the purple Country of the Gillikins with an old woman named Mombi. The neighbors suspect her of magic, and Tip openly hates her.
One day, while Mombi is away, Tip carves a grinning pumpkin face to scare her. He builds a tall man from saplings and pegs, dresses him in her old clothes, and names him Jack Pumpkinhead. Mombi comes home early with a new Powder of Life and sprinkles it over the dummy. Tip, hiding behind a hedge, is first terrified and then helpless with laughter.
