About this book
Behind three men's names, the Brontë sisters speak of grief, faith, and a soul that longs for freedom.
Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell brings Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë together in their only shared collection of verse. Charlotte writes as Currer, Emily as Ellis, and Anne as Acton. Their chosen names ask readers to judge the poems rather than the women behind them. Across sixty-one poems, three distinct voices share the page.
Charlotte's storytelling poems explore duty and longing through speakers such as a wife, a teacher, or a lover. Emily turns to moors, stars, imprisonment, and the desire for freedom. Anne speaks more quietly of home, memory, hope, and trust in God. Wind, heather, and winter snow connect their different worlds, giving private feelings a concrete landscape.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Three sisters secretly make a book
The Brontë sisters grew up in a house full of reading and writing. Their father, Patrick Brontë, was the clergyman at Haworth, a stone village on the Yorkshire moors. With their brother Branwell, the children wrote tiny books, stories and poems from an early age. By their twenties, all three sisters wrote verse in private.
In the autumn of 1845, Charlotte read a notebook of poems in Emily's hand. She later wrote that she was surprised, and more than surprised. She found the poems compact, simple and strange, with a wild music that was not like what women were expected to write. Emily was angry that her private pages had been read. It took time, and Charlotte's patience, to bring her round.

Why did the Brontë sisters use the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell?
They wanted their work judged on its own merits. The names were male but kept each sister's initials: Charlotte was Currer, Emily was Ellis and Anne was Acton. Charlotte later said they feared prejudice against women writers.
What is Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell about?
It is a shared collection of about sixty poems on love, grief, faith, nature, memory and the longing for freedom. Each sister writes in her own voice, with Charlotte often telling stories, Emily seeking the unseen, and Anne reflecting quietly.
When was the book published, and who paid for it?
It was published in London in 1846 by Aylott and Jones. The sisters paid for the printing themselves. It was the first time all three appeared in print, before their novels.
