About this book

What if the comfort you love becomes the one thing you cannot escape?

In St Petersburg, Ilya Ilyich Oblomov lies in his dressing gown while letters, visitors and decisions wait. He is gentle, honest and full of dreams. He cannot bring himself to answer a letter, move house or manage his estate. In Ivan Goncharov’s novel, even getting out of bed becomes a struggle between the familiar room and the demanding world outside.

His old servant Zakhar grumbles and shares his stubborn habits. His tireless boyhood friend Andrei Stolz tries to draw him into an active life. Then Olga Ilyinskaya sees a man she believes love can awaken. As their romance grows, practical demands press closer, and Oblomov faces choices that nobody else can make for him.

A man who will not get up

The novel opens in a rented apartment on Gorokhovaya Street in St Petersburg. Ilya Ilyich Oblomov is lying in bed, as he does on most mornings and for much of every day. He is a landowner in his early thirties, with soft hands, a round pleasant face and a loose Eastern dressing gown that he loves like an old friend. He owns an estate called Oblomovka, with several hundred serfs, far from the capital.

What is Oblomov about?

Oblomov is about a good-natured Russian landowner who lies on his sofa and cannot face practical decisions. Friends, a servant and a young woman try to change him, and the book asks why willpower fades.

What does Oblomovism mean?

Oblomovism means a habit of apathy and daydreaming that keeps a person from acting. The critic Dobrolyubov used it to describe the idle gentry class, but it is now used for anyone who drifts and delays.

When was Oblomov written and is it a true story?

Oblomov was published in 1859, shortly before serfdom ended in Russia. It is a work of fiction, though it draws on Goncharov's knowledge of provincial estates and St Petersburg life.
