About this book
What if the smallest creatures and quietest days hold the things most worth noticing?
In The Singing Mouse Stories, Emerson Hough brings together short, gentle tales of nature, animals and remembered days. His eye for the land shapes a world of outdoor life and simple pleasures. Here, ordinary things invite a closer look, and small moments offer room for feelings that a busy day can leave unnoticed.
The collection explores memory and the wisdom hidden in everyday life. Its themes include a writer shaped by open country, the feelings small creatures can carry, and the weight of remembered days. Care for animals and respect for the land give these tales their quiet appeal, without the rush of a fast, busy plot.

In short
What would you give for a small voice that turns a worn room into a hall of gold? A man sits alone near midnight.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A worn room and a mouse that sings
The book opens with a man showing you his room. He offers what little he has. There is a table, a fire and no keys. His coat is worn, his old gun is rubbed smooth, and the silk on his fishing rod is fraying. He asks you not to mock these things, even if your own are finer.
Then he tells you the secret of the room. The Singing Mouse will not come out while visitors are there. Only after the fire burns low, near midnight, does it appear and ask for a bit of bread. It folds its tiny paws, turns its red eye on him, and sings.
