About this book
What if a song could turn spiritual thirst into living water, and the soul into a harp?
The Odes of Solomon gathers forty-two short hymns of praise, written by unknown singers in Solomon’s name. Their voices speak of love for God, joy, and the presence of the Spirit. Rooted in early Christian devotion, these poems invite you into a world where faith takes shape through intimate, vivid images.
A crown never withers. The Spirit plays the singer like a harp. A dove flies over the Messiah, and Christ descends among the dead. Through the Beloved, living water, and songs of liberation, the Odes explore spiritual awakening. They offer images rather than arguments, leaving room to linger with their dreamlike language.

A hymn-book lost and found again
For many centuries the Odes of Solomon were almost unknown. A few scraps of them had survived in other books, so scholars knew that such a collection once existed. A Latin Christian writer named Lactantius, in the early fourth century, quoted a line from what he called Solomon about a virgin giving birth. A Coptic book called Pistis Sophia, which belongs to a Gnostic circle in Egypt, quoted several odes in full. Some church lists of disputed books mentioned Odes of Solomon by name. But no complete text was in anyone's hands.
Then in 1909 a British scholar, James Rendel Harris, found a Syriac manuscript among papers he had acquired. He first took it to be a copy of the Psalms of Solomon, a different Jewish work. Looking closer, he saw that it held a set of songs nobody had read in modern times. He published them that same year, and the news spread quickly through the scholarly world.

What are the Odes of Solomon about?
They are forty-two short hymns of praise. They sing of God's love, the gift of the Spirit, the joy of the believer, the coming of Christ, and his descent among the dead, using images such as water, a harp, a crown and a dove.
Did King Solomon write the Odes of Solomon?
No. Scholars agree that the Odes are much later than Solomon, who lived about a thousand years before. His name was used as a pen name for songs of wisdom and praise. The real author or authors are unknown.
When were the Odes of Solomon written?
Most scholars date them between the late first century and the third century, with many favouring the second. The place is probably Syria. Date, place and original language are still debated, since the evidence is thin.
